Inventory Storage: Where Should I Store Inventory?

Storage and inventory control processes are important for all companies. Inventory storage includes activities associated to holding materials and the processes of counting and transacting the material as it moves through your warehouse.

Warehouse layouts will vary depending on the goals and needs of your business. A facility that supports product distribution to stores would be different than that of a facility that supports manufacturing.

No matter what those end goals look like for your warehouse, companies of all sizes have implemented storage systems to see the needs of their business. Optimizing your warehouse layouts and storage systems can give you a competitive advantage, bottom line growth and will help you improve customer satisfaction.

Warehouse management software gives you the insights you need to track your inventory efficiently and accurately. It allows warehouses to focus on excellent cube-fill rates.

Finding low cost inventory storage can be difficult, right?

It can be tough to find a fulfillment center that only charges you for the storage space you use, but shouldn’t it be that way to begin with? We think so.

A lot of order fulfillment companies do charge storage fees and have minimum requirements for storing product. If you store products for a long time, you may be subject to a fee.

Types Of Inventory Storage

There’s several different types of inventory storage available for companies. For your business, it makes sense partnering with an order fulfillment company that can accurately and effectively store your unique products.

(1) Shelves And Bins

Shelves and bins can be stationary, flexible or mobile. This storage type uses automated carousels, aisle savers and bins for smaller products.

(2) Central Storage

Tracking inventory in a single location, such as a warehouse or storage room. This inventory storage type often relies on using shelves and bins.

(3) Block Stacking

One of the most common ways to store inventory is block stocking. With this type, storage begins on a floor pallet. Block stocking works great for fast moving products or products you use right away.

(4) Storage Racks

Storage racks are used for a wide range of inventory storage needs, many that block stacking can’t give you. How you use these storage racks is going to depend on your inventory management strategy. What will you be implementing, last-in, first-out or first-in, first-out inventory management?

(5) Point Of Use Strategy

Just-in-time and repetitive production operations employ point-of-use storage. This strategy places your team and inventory at a specific station. Point of use refers to

(6) Dry Storage

Restaurants, grocers and other food businesses use dry storage for bread, pasta and other dry foods. When you’re storing dry goods, many things need to take place. Proper temperature, ventilation, light, cleanliness and humidity levels are critical to avoiding bacteria. Dry storage must be stored at the proper temperatures. Due to the fact that dry goods have a short shelf-life, companies that are using dry storage often rotate stock on a first-in-first out basis.

(7) Cold Storage

Some food inventory is stored in refrigerators, coolers and freezers to maintain safety and preserve quality. In most cases, refrigerators will keep the food for 7 days. if food is not needed quickly, you can use freezers, which can keep some foods good up to a full year. While some products are not good to freeze, others like some juices can be stored for up to 365 days.

Warehouse Management Software

Most companies maintain all information on a single system of record and keep it current and accurate.

Product data should include all product characteristics including cube data, lot/serial-number information, and special requirements so that product can be directed to special storage areas.

Special storage areas may be used to segregate items with odor transfer or fire risk or that require temperature control. High-value product might require caged or controlled-access storage.

Here at Thill Inc., we provide full-scale warehouse services. We have the capabilities to help you in multiple areas of your warehousing strategy.
